What is a Surge Protection System?

Direct and indirect lightning strikes on a building can cause either a surge in electrical power. This power surge can have a detrimental effect on electrical equipment. Considerable damage will disrupt operational and critical services resulting in expensive repairs costs.

An effective surge protection system will prevent surges in electrical power from damaging your infrastructure or property in the event of a lightning strike.

How Does a Surge Protection System Work?

A surge protector works by transitioning between high and low levels of impedance. At normal operating voltages, the surge protector operates in a high impedance state and will not affect your electrical system. If the voltage rises above a certain level the surge protector kicks in. It will surpass the excess voltage and divert it safely to the ground, preventing it from causing any harm.

Why Do We Need Surge Protectors?

There are many reasons your business should have a surge protection system in place.

-  If your building is located near a hilltop, a tall stricture in a lightning prone area.

-  If your machinery or equipment requires resistance to over voltage.

-  If you depend on a lot of electrical, or ICT for your business.

-  If surges are generated internally from larger motors or operations.

Every business has different needs and therefore will require different surge protection systems. You may, for instance, install a surge protector on your fire alarms, or installing a system on security systems and data centres. Different combinations can be installed depending on the needs of your business and premises.
